Cantabria is one of the smallest regions in Spain (400 Km. Of borders, 172 of coastline y 5.289 Km2), yet its brevity is compensated by the range and beauty of its valleys and the abundance of illustrious names, both men and women, in all walks of life.
From the mouth of the Deva River, in the best to the tiny estuary in Onton, to the east, the Cantabrian coast offers a stunning spectacle of coast and mountains, flora and fauna, towns fishing villages.
Along this route, we find spectacular cliffs, more than 60 beaches, and the splendid bays of Santoña and Santander, without equal on the north coast of Spain.
The ‘Cordillera Cantábrica’, the mountain ranges that dominate and determine the map, rise from east to west, reaching heights of more than 2500 m in the magnificent Picos de Europa, whose snowy peaks are the first thing we see, and from this take their name, on arriving by sea to Cantabria.
The gastronomy of the region deserves a special mention. You can enjoy traditional dishes, chickpea or bean stews such as ‘cocido lebaniego’ or ‘cocido montañes’, fish and seafood; and for dessert, ‘quesadas and sobaos’.
Great importance is given to cheeses. Three local cheeses enjoy the highest possible distinction: ‘Queso de Cantabria’, ‘Queso picón Bejes-Tesviso’ and ‘Quesucos de Liébana’. |
